Older policies aren't claimed or fail to pay because:

1. Beneficiaries don't know about policies that would be paid to them.

2. Insurance companies are bought by other companies and policyholders don't know it and don't know where to get information.

3. Agents stop selling and nobody informs the policyholders.

4. Loans and partial surrenders cause policies to lapse, especially Universal Life policies written in the mid-1980's. Policyholders lose those policies when they are unable to get a similar amount of insurance at an affordable cost.

5. If policyholders have a critical or chronic illness, older policies, won't assist with medical expenses (but newer policies do).

To avoid the problems, I recommend that clients have a policy review at least every several years. And I would be pleased if you would allow me to do this for you. I also recommend that everyone should have a newer policy, in addition to any older insurance policy, so that you will have a policy that has “insurance on the policy”.
